1987 Honda Accord LX-i Hatchback review from North America

"An inexpensive bargain that you will love to drive"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Air conditioning needed to be recharged when the car was purchased used. The system only had a quarter charge left.

The rear right upper control arm needed replacing.

The muffler and rear exhaust (all one piece) were replaced.

The gasket around the top of the block needed replacing. Until I had it repaired, the car cooked off oil that seeped out. It made for some interesting some effects.

The gaskets on the tail lights are going, and water ends up inside the lens after a heavy rain.

The EGR subsystem has problems at times, and causes the check-engine light to illuminate. I've had this fixed at various times, but the problem keeps reoccurring.

The struts holding the hatch open were replaced.

The radio reception is terrible, and I can't get AM stations. The speakers are slowly failing.

The thermostat stuck open in the middle of the coldest week of winter, leaving me without heat until I could get it replaced.

Despite all of the above, the car has *never* stranded me. Nothing serious has ever gone wrong, and most of the maintenance is fairly routine.

General comments?

The car has good handling, and decent performance due to its light weight (2455 pounds with automatic transmission).

The looks are somewhat dated, but that can't be helped.

I get about 28 MPG with my driving style, which isn't exactly sedate.

The read seat has a surprising amount of room for such a small car.

The seats aren't bad, but they could be more comfortable. Being able to flip down the rear seats is great for moving large objects.

The hatch can fit an amazing amount of stuff - I managed to get a gas barbecue grill home with the trunk closed!
