1993 Honda Accord DX review from North America
"A very wise buy"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Master and slave clutch cylinder went out 500 miles after I purchased the car, replaced that parts and labor $250.
One cracked inside door release inset, exchanged from front passenger side to rear.
Antenna replaced with fixed rubber type.
General comments?
I had done all of the research and knew that the best cars to have were Japanese. My first car (big mistake) was a 72 Volkswagen Bus, which I had problems with from the start. Moving right along, I had always wanted a SVX and came across one at a local dealership in Burgundy, which I love. Great car, great power and handling, almost too good. Topping it out at 135 on a bypass route through Salem on I-5, barely feeling any type of shimmy at all. Unfortunately I became unemployed and couldn't afford the payments so I sold it on Ebay for four grand. Which brings me to my Accord.
Back to my research and knowing that Japan makes some good quality autos, I had my sights set on buying Honda or Toyota. My fiance has had a 88 Toyota Corolla SR5 for awhile now and has over 220k miles on it, so I know that the cars can last. I have a very particular taste in cars and wouldn't settle on anything other than the 4th generation Accords or a 90-91 Civic. Being from a fairly large city I had my choice of a variety of lots, from 82nd street Mexi/Russian lots, to the more upscale Westside dealerships. Having a budget around $5000 I knew that I would be able to get the car I wanted without losing an arm and a leg. Anyways, I eventually found the car I had been looking for, a rosewood 93 Accord DX. Without A/C and a few other luxury options I only slightly hesistated as I bought the car, knowing that I was entering the winter months and wouldn't need it for about 8 more. From the start I fell in love with this car. I don't mind the more sedan like appearence, for that I feel that keeping it on the downlow can potentially save a lot of future ticketing and attention from police. Being a DX it didn't come with cupholders, so I installed those from a LX or the same year. I am currently looking for the optional center armrest that also acts as a center console. This car runs like a charm if you fore go the repairs I had to make on the clutch cylinders, which I believe should be replaced around 120k miles anyway. Other than that, I feel that this car was a perfect choice for me and for where I am at in this point in my life.
Going from the SVX to the Accord I noticed a rather large decrease in HP (233 down to 120), and a slight downgrade in handling. Not to say the Accord needs more power, but it sure couldn't hurt. But I figure, who's in a hurry to get somewhere, and quite frankly I think my 'driving crazy' days are behind me. All I care about now is a good stereo (which I have), and a reliable source of transportation. I know that this car will last me another 100k miles, and I will probably buy another Accord in the future (I love the new styling on the 03). So once again I am 100% happy with my decision to buy my first Honda; plenty of interior and trunk room, reliable, safe, and the perfect car for my needs. I would without a doubt buy another Honda.
