1992 Honda Accord LX review from North America
"Reliable model and year, car definitely gives back the care you put into it"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
In Order...
Replaced Water Pump; the engine is an interference type engine, so in replacing the water pump, the following were also replaced: head gasket, all of the belts (including the timing belt), one serpentine assembly pulley. this cost me about $760 at the shop. Found out later there's another way to replace the water pump without going through the entire engine (from below, removing a few things as well, but easier, shh!)
Replaced Distributor Cap, Wires, & Spark Plugs.
Replaced Main Fuel Relay (apparently a typical problem with this year Honda and Acura, it's under the dash, driver's side, above/behind the ECU and controls the amount of fuel to the FI upon start up. If your Honda/Acura won't start in the heat, then replace this relay.)
Replaced Valve Cover Seal & Spark Plug Port Seals (shop bungled them from the water pump ordeal)
Currently the car has devoured 3 quarts of oil in 2000 miles of driving with no visible leaks and the catalytic converter is smelling like a rotten egg. I'm wondering if the two are related...
Suspension is starting to feel like it could use replacing soon.
General comments?
I bought this car from the dealership for about $2000, it had been detailed, repaired, and repainted. I am the 3rd owner, currently trying to sell it. It has had it's problems, but considering that I've put over 100,000 miles on it in two years I can't say it's been unreliable. I've owned way worse cars. Cosmetically, this car is great. You'd think it was brand new except for a yellow streak inside the driver's side wheel wells where I ran over fresh paint on the road (grr!!). Interior has held up just fine throughout the years.
I did most of the work on this car myself, except the water pump. I find this car is a pain to work on because of the amount of space (or lack thereof) to work with, and this is coming from a small guy. But I've enjoyed it, kept up on regular oil changes, brake pads, tires, etc.
Overall, I'm satisfied with it. But I'd like to move on from it now...
