1979 Honda Civic cvcc review from North America
"Cute little scrap heap"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Brakes needed replacing
front axle corroded
head warped
battery died
went through 2 water pumps
overheated in summer
shook at speeds over 50
could hardly be coaxed to go 50
no power up inclines
only had it 8 months, poured 2000 into it
General comments?
It would be wise to buy a car this old only from someone you know; VIN checks don't go back this far. Also, there are only 5 digits for mileage, so "68,500" could mean 168,500, 368,500, 668,500...
It would also be a good idea to have a trustworthy mechanic look at it before purchasing. The person I took it to after I bought it supposedly did all kinds of diagnostics and repairs, and certainly charged me for them, but after being towed to the nearest station after losing power on the freeway, the mechanic said it looked like the oil hadn't been changed in years! I have a receipt that says it was done, but no evidence. The former owner had handwritten logs of service he had done, but who can say they are authentic?
Basically, don't be a naive old lady like me. Enlist the help of a knowledgeable third party if you are gullible.
