The throttle position sensor went bad at 75,000 miles.
The Ignition Control Module went bad at 140,000 miles.
It runs great and always starts no matter how cold it is.
It gets great gas mileage.
The interior build quality is far superior to any domestic car I've driven.
Including insurance and gas, this car costs me nearly half as much per mile as my Escort did.
My sensor in my 1989 Civic also went bad at 75,000 although it continues to operate at 80,000. Parts needed to repair it will run about $1,000 since Honda does not sell the part I need separately. Otherwise it has been a good car.
My VX just turned over 200,000 miles. I have had it since new, and still have the original clutch. Nothing bigger than a distributor has gone out. Gas mileage is 42-52 mpg. This car still looks and runs like new. It was, and is, the highest gas mileage 4 cylinder car in the world, and is now very rare.
I've had my 95 (vx) from it's conception and have been extremely happy. I just turned over 300,000 miles and just replaced the clutch. Not bad!
I've never had any problems that left me stranded except when a rat somehow got underneath the back seat and proceeded to eat one of the fuel wires which scared the crap out of the mechanic when he lifted the seat.
I went to replace the ignition wires, rotor and distributor cap today and started right up without hesitation. I turned the key off and it wouldn't start again after that.
I was told it might be the ignition module?
Any ideas or similar mishaps?
Jeff.
I've had my '92 VX on the road since new and have 170,000 Km - about 106,000 miles, on the beast up here in Toronto (same exact specs, same user manual, even, as in States) and she's only given me two problems - distributor cap cracked, and, just recently, the rad went. Awesome mileage makes it impossible for me to give her up. Bad rust on both lower back wheel wells... I think I'm gonna fix that and keep her running for another 100,000 miles!
I have owned my Civic VX since new in Feb 1992. I now have a little over 150k on it.
The the paint is faded, the speedometer went out at 85k miles, the throttle body gets dirty and acts up occasionally for some reason, water got into the left taillight assembly and corroded the electrics, and I just two weeks ago replaced the 02 sensor (I think the first time for that repair...).
I’ve upgraded the shocks w/Tokico Illumina fully adjustable coil-overs and added a 22 mm rear sway bar, front and rear upper strut braces, and 16” wheels with 205/40 Nitto NeoGen tires. I swap out the big wheels for Toyo 185/70/13 RA1s on the OEM wheels for high-performance driving schools here in Northern California. Can you say “Yee-ha!”?
I have an idea to make it into a race car. I'm allowed to add bolt-ons to the engine, but am interested in leaving the internals – especially the cam – stock in order to keep the car in the “correct” classification. I’d really like to leave it as somewhat of a “sleeper” in a group consisting CRX Si’s and the like, but don’t want to be pushed around. I'd also like to keep up with the Miatas and Minis on open track days... Anyone have any recommendations for horsepower gains that won't break the bank? No forced induction, so no turbo or supercharging… I’m thinking swoopty intake, header, catback.
Thanks!

Hi there,
I have a 1992 civic vx. I have gotten 55mpg twice under controlled conditions. Now can only get 47 under controlled conditions (got that 4 times in the past 2 months.) Can anyone give me some tips? I replaced the plugs and air filter and timing belt. The intake valves were all too tight so I loosened them a bit to get them in spec. (Is there a typo in Honda's intake spec? It says 0.20 intake.) (All the exhaust valves had were in spec, so that's why I suspect a problem with Honda's spec).
Thanks Donald email me at ceilidtoes@yahoo.ca.
1993 Honda Civic VX. Seems to stall after running intermittently. Won't start if it is hot outside. Open the hood and it starts. Everything under the hood is cool. Sometimes it starts any way. Had a similiar problem with a 94 VX. Is this a symptom some of you are familar with. Lawrence Rhodes bassoon@jps.net.
To the comment that wants to make the CX a SLEEPER... spend some money and drop in a H22 engine or B16/B18... It has several benefit..1) NEW engine/tranny = better reliability 2) POWER POWER TORQUE TORQUE 3) Get more HP per DOLLAR than bolts on... I have a H22 on mine... were able to keep up with LS1 Vette and M3...Talk about SLEEPER!!!
