"Great performance if you have lots of oil"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The car ran great when I purchased it, since 265000 k's, it has required a quart of oil at every fill up. The back of the car is practically stained black.

Universal Joint and Axle replaced at 270000 k's.

Entire brake system, including master cylinder, rear drums and wheel cylinders, front brake pads and calipers, required replacement at 280000 k's, an easy way to spend $1300.

Hood only pops up after pulling on the release 2-3 times.

Sunroof Leaks, it's probably a cheap fix, but I haven't gotten around to it.

General comments?

The car handles great. Takes corners with very little leaning.

Excellent acceleration, no problem out-running comparable compacts off the line. SI edition far quicker than the DX.

Fun engine noise--the fact that it isn't that quiet makes driving it feel a lot more exciting.

I imagine this vehicle was great when it had a lot less kilometers on it. If someone before me had kept it up better, I don't think I'd be having the problems I have now.

I just wanted to comment on your review. I also have a 1991 Honda Civic Si. It has about 340,000 miles on it. Not sure of the kilometers conversion. I just bought it a few days ago and thus far it has done very well. I have put about 600 miles on it driving it around my home town and then down to Florida where I currently live. About 400 of those miles being interstate driving at speeds of 70-90 mph. Not a drop of oil used. No leaks at all on the car from the oil and cooling system to the sunroof and weather stripping. Fairly brisk acceleration, good breaking and excellent handling considering the car is as stock as it was when it rolled off the manufacturers assembly line. Other than the expected small dings over the years the body is in great shape and rust free and there are only two small interior blemishes. All options (bells and whistles) on the car work except for the A/C and I have a new condenser on the way. The tires have plenty of tread, but were not rotated properly so they are feathered and I get road noise from that. The only remaining thing that needs to be taken care of is the exhaust system. It is the original and needs replacing. I am going to drive it as it is for now and I have already bought a ZC 1.6 DOHC non-VTEC for the car that I will be putting in next year. Bolts right in (A/C and all) with only minor wiring modifications. With 30 more horsepower and 10 more ft/lbs of torque it should prove to make the car much more lively and still be super reliable. I am sorry that you have the problems that you do, but I can only assume it is due to past neglect as I have substantially more mileage on my car and it is in excellent shape.

My regards.

Phillip.

A $3000 engine swap from an Integra could breathe all new life into that car. Done by local mechanics, you would then be able to take out Mustang GT's, WRX's, etc. Also no more smokey smokey and no more stained rear of car.

I had the same problem with my 1987 crx si, it went through a quart of oil every 350 miles!!! Turns out it was the valve guides and seats. I don't know if that helps any, or if you already solved your problem. I'm buying a '91 si hatchback this weekend (7/17/05) wish me luck!!

Brady.
