This is my first car and I have been very impressed with its blend performance, handling and reliability.

The engine only displaces 1396cc, but being a Honda unit it's happy being taken up to the redline and although not VTEC equipped, it sounds great.

90 bhp and 900 kg means it feels fast, even if you're not going fast. The handling is fairly neutral, although as with most front wheel drive hatchbacks, it will 'lift off' oversteer if provoked. The steering is well weighted and provides decent feedback.

The gearbox is slick, although with the miles it's done, probably a bit notchier than when it first came out the factory. Feels great once the oil has warmed through and baulk free.

The interior is very functional and has good ergonomics. It has electric windows, mirrors and sunroof, but strangely no central locking. Interior space is good front and back.

This car has cost me next to nothing to run due to its reliability. Apart from servicing, MOTs and tyres there's been no need to take it to the garage. On long trips I can return over 40 mpg though with my heavy right foot normal driving usually means between 35-38 mpg. Insurance is more costly than the equivalent Escort or Astra, but it's worth paying the extra for the peace of mind.
