1997 Honda Civic LSi review from UK and Ireland
"Fun, reliable and cheap to run"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
No actual "faults"
Just needed a new exhaust centre section as it had rusted, and a hole appeared.
The new part had a loose heat shield, so it was re-welded, only took about 1 minute to fix.
General comments?
I have modified the car slightly with lowered springs and 17" alloy wheels. I also have an up-graded exhaust back box.
The wheels and suspension make an already decent handling car, much better. The ride is fairly comfortable yet firm, and still has little roll in the corners.
The Exhaust sounds lovely, and combined with the lovely engine, the car is a joy to drive.
The engine sounds excellent, and revs up to 7200rpm. Over 5000rpm the car comes alive and is very quick for a 120bhp car. This is due to the v-tec which is fancy Japanese cam- shaft technology.
The drivetrain is very smooth and the gearshift smooth and precise, but not "mechanical" enough in feel for me.
The steering is direct, but could be a little sharper and better
weighted (heavier).
Room in the back is excellent for people up to and just over 6 feet tall, and the seats are comfortable, but could do with a bit more side support.
Fuel economy is good when driven conservatively, but when thrashed it does about 30mpg.
Servicing costs are frightening compared to my previous cars, but it is essensial, as Hondas are quite highly tuned cars.
Parts are also expensive, but this is not too much of a worry due to Honda's impeccable reliability and engineering quality.
Overall an excellent car that has opened the world of Japanese cars and tuning, that makes driving fun!
