Hello, I was just given a 77 Honda cvcc, and it has sat for two years in the desert. I put a battery in it and the thing fired up, and ran for 3 minutes. I cleaned the carb put new gas, and treatment in the tank, and we drove it for the first time tonight. Needs a tune up, but with 261,000 miles my 11 year old son wants it for his first car in a few years. I can't believe this car doesn't leak underneath or anything!
All this hooting about how 30 year old cars that get 45 mpg should be built again today ignores the fact that those cars would be unable to meet current emission and safety requirements, even if there were many buyers willing to pay 2009 dollars for 1979 technology.
A red 1977 Honda Civic 5 speed CVCC was also my first car. I liked the way it handled better than my MPB GT on back mountain country roads.
I added a trip computer, and my best average was 43 MPG on 400 mile, not stop trips between GA and VA when the speed limit was only 55. I had a friend who helped me get all of the accessories for it at cost.
It was a fun car to drive. After I got married I transferred the 5 spd, tack and accessories into a 1976 wagon. At 50K miles I also put in an accord clutch.
On long trips this unique station wagon got 30 MPG loaded down with the family and luggage traveling 62 mph between FL and VA.
In 1983 I drove a Celebrity company car with a 3.0L 6 cylinders, 3 speed automatic and AC, which got 25 mpg on the same trip with more room. Honda wanted over 5K more for a 4 door Honda sedan in 1984 than an American car and they were now ugly box cars, so I gave up on them.
My original Honda was half the price of any America car, fun to drive, look like a sports car and drove like one.
My first car was a '76 Honda Civic CVCC. That thing was amazing. The engine block cracked around 230,000 miles (previous owners fault.) But it STILL ran almost perfectly in spite of that. It never left me stranded either.
Used some oil (due to cracked engine block) and smoked like crazy upon start-up (also due to engine block) but it never failed to start. I finally traded it in on a newer vehicle when it had 490,000 miles. Original engine and tranny. I loved that car. Her name was Erma :)
Oh yeah, and it was still running fine when I traded it in.
