Hello:

I have a story that in many ways is like that of the original commenter. I purchased my Honda Civic VX in April of 1995. At less than $11,250, it has been an awesome car.

While living in Maine, I was driving her to work each day in Boston - a 230 mile round trip. After more than 250,000 miles, she only ever needed a muffler system, an oxygen sensor (I replaced myself), and tires. While I have been very happy replacing Dunlop tires with Dunlops, I was quite upset with the addition of MtBE to gasoline. I keep meticulous records of where and when the car gets serviced, including where, when, and what type of gas I put in her tank. I made it a habit to always purchase Mobil gasoline. The choice of the Mobil brand was more out of convenience (neighborhood station), but using the same brand of gasoline seemed important - keeping all things the same - I was looking for that EPA 45 city / 65 highway rating.

When I first purchased the car, she regularly got just over 50 mpg cruising with traffic at 75 to 80 mph. Immediately with the addition of MtBE (i.e., an oxygenate that is supposed to reduce the release of hydrocarbons from the incomplete combustion of fuel) my fuel economy dropped to 45 mpg - a 20 percent drop. So tell me this... how do you release less pollution if you burn more gasoline? Unfortunately, the addition of ethanol to gasoline causes the same reduction in fuel efficiency.

Regardless, I still drive this gem of a car. While I no longer work in Boston, and haven't made a regular trip to Boston since 1997, I still take her on the road for long distance travel. I've taken her across the east coast - as far south as Atlanta, Georgia and as far west as Cincinnati, Ohio.

In the last couple of years, New England winters have begun to take their toll on her body, with rust beginning to take hold over the rear wheel arches and along the door sills. I've made one repair (bondo) so far. Additionally, the odometer works on and off - mostly at 20 mph no matter how fast you go. Still, how do you part company with a car that has treated you so well, that still beats the new hybrids in sheer joy to drive and in fuel economy.

The biggest issue I have with this vehicle has developed over the years as my sons have grown. My oldest son, born in 1995, is now playing foot ball as a freshman in high school. At 180 pounds and 6 foot 3, he has a hard time getting into the back seat with his 5 ft tall brother - Mom rides shotgun, while I drive. For a family of four, it is not all that comfortable anymore, but in a few years it will be where my son learns to drive.

I have a 2008 Honda Civic, and I love it. I used to be a diehard American car buyer, but somebody suggested to me that I give Honda a try. Boy was I surprised! This car has been way better than all my previous purchases! I now see why these Japanese cars have such a good reputation. I used to think all the repairs that came with my domestic vehicles were just part of owning a car, now I know you shouldn't have to deal with all those repairs!

And I'll admit, I am very hard on my cars, partly because I'm very forgetful when it comes to maintenance. But this Civic has taken it all in stride, and it still runs like the day I drove it off the lot. 25,000 miles and not a single problem, my last car, a Ford Windstar, needed a whole new intake manifold within 25,000 miles! I'm so glad I made the switch to Honda.

Hello everyone.

I just purchased a 93 VX (fed) in June in Haines Alaska. 180,000 and in outstanding condition. So happy with the fact that I drive all around a small ak. town and get a true 44 mpg.

I must say I have learned SO much on this site, and I want to thank everyone.

Now my situation... I get what seems like a miss or skip at low rpms. About between 1100-1300. Almost seems to be missing. It has NEW coil, plug wires, cap and rotor. The miss is more of an annoyance than anything else, however cuz I am a gearhead, I would like to get rid of it. No CEL, no nothing. Seems to run fine in every other way.

Also, when I purchased OEM NGK pugs, they had single electrodes. The ones I removed were quad. Are they better for MPG??

Thank you.

Greetings, Alaska!

www.gassavers.org is pretty close to a VX owners' forum... lots of VX folks there.

www.ecomodder.com has a lot of VX owners (many folks are on both sites) and a lot of tips on how to get even higher mpg.
