1987 Honda CRX Si review from North America

"Poor Man's Mini Cooper S"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

New Clutch at 165,000.

Rebuilt Transmission with new seals at 165,000.

A/C compressor died at 180,000.

Timing Belt replaced at 170,000.

Alternator died at 170,000.

Main Relay replaced at 160,000 (if your PGM-FI light will not come on and the car will not start, it's your MAIN RELAY) About $50.00 at Napa auto parts. Easy fix you can replace yourself.

New Ignition switch.

Regular Maintenance.

Paint does not hold up well over the years.

General comments?

My 1987 CRX Si was purchased on eBay for $1200 back in 2005 when gas prices first started to top $4.00 per gallon.

These cars get 30mpg city 40+ hwy even if you tend to drive with a heavy foot and mine is no exception. I've saved about $3000 a year on gas because of this car.

I LOVE my CRX Si. It's the most reliable car I have ever owned. This thing is 22 years old with 180,000 miles and it still runs great, starts right up, and will still blow the doors off most modern cars.

The car is very light weight and corners like it's on rails, you can take highway on ramps at amazing speeds.

There are two ways that these cars get killed by the owners:

First is the timing belt breaking.

The timing belt is very important and you need to change it every 70,000 miles. If it breaks, you'll need a new engine when the valves are destroyed so it's best to change it if you have any doubts about it's condition. This is the #1 way most owners kill an otherwise perfect running CRX.

Second, Don't let the car overheat.

Many owners have a cooling system problem, see the temperature needle go into the red and think, oh I'll just get it home and worry about it then. This kills the engine. If you have ANY cooling system problem, STOP, Do not drive a Honda CRX hot or you'll need a new engine.

If you avoid these to areas and keep your cooling system in good condition, you'll have a Honda that will run for 300,000 miles or more.
