1993 Honda del Sol Type R review from North America
"Awesome"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Del Sols like any old Honda are prone to rust, especially around the rear wheel well. This car is no exception and is starting to show signs. I will have to replace the quarter panels eventually.
The removable roof leaks sometimes in heavy rain.
General comments?
OK well this is a different style of review, one based on rebuilt cars rather than original. I think this is a valid review as a trillion hondas have been built for performance. Since del sols are getting pretty old, well...
ANYWAY I had a Japanese spec 98 Integra Type R engine and transmission (B18C) installed into the car keeping power steering, but losing A/C by choice. The motor currently has about 80K on it and runs flawlessly, I had it chipped and put in a Hytec header with Genie exhaust and it put down 178 WHP on a dyno. Fairly straight forward motor swap, total cost was just over $7k. The original clutch didn't last very long so I upgraded to an exedy unit with a 7lb flywheel. The LSD in the trans is a nice feature... I have also had Bilstien suspension installed along with integra brakes front and rear, stronger than OEM brake pads, and some stiffening bars throughout the car. I use Falken tires and light wheight rims.
With the said mods, my car is about as reliable as a stock Del Sol/ Civic. It never fails, its quiet, and chicks love it! Performance wise you really can't beat it... Sure 900000 HP v8s will beat it in a drag race, but that's not what its all about. It's a great all rounder with a wonderful engine that revs to the moon, and cornering that leaves most cars in the dust. I plan to get into circuit racing when I have more time...
Next I will venture into the new K series engines and I think back to using an EG (92-95) civic. If modding old cars is something you are into, take a look at the hondas!! Best bang for the buck if you ask me, and nice ones are becoming more and more rare every year.
