1995 Honda del Sol VTEC review from North America
"A very sweet two-seater targa top"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
I haven't had any problems with this car. Routine maintenance like oil changes and timing belt have been really been the only costs. The car was lowered 2 inches in rear and 1.5 inches in front by the previous owner (I don't know how he did it, but it sure wore out the Z-rated tires that came with it).
The only other thing that is wrong with this car is that I turned it into a sport import street/show car and now it is useless in the snow. I have to sell it now as I live in a snowy part of Canada where I would have practical use of the car for approximately 5 months or so.
Oh yeah, the only other negative item about this model of car - VTEC Dual-overhead cam is that it will only take premium unleaded gas which is about 0.10 cents more expensive per litre of gasoline in Canada. Yikes. On road trips though, I did get approximately 700 litres per tank on highway (40 litre tank) and that includes adding a lot of high performance goodies to increase horsepower.
General comments?
I love this car! I cannot spread enough good around about this car and it will be sorely missed.
A joy to fix up with aftermarket goodies.
Fairly reasonably priced for such a rare car in Canada. I kept this one in pristine condition that people would approach me and ask me if this was a new model car that had just come out. They would litterally be in shock when I told them that it was a 1995.
Be aware though that the targa top seals tend to go on the pre-1995 models.
Also the arm rests on the interior parts of the doors which come down on a curve tend to have the glue come undone from the sponge/foam.
The engine is very easy to work on if you are a do-it-yourselfer like me.
There is not a lot of storage behind the two seats, however, the trunk design is really neat - as in - the targa roof stores and locks into the trunk. This allows the owner to have an instant convertible in about 20 seconds - which is really good on those uncertain rainy/sunny days.
