1991 Honda Prelude Si review from North America

"Great sporty coupe, awesome gas mileage"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The plug wires were older than dirt, and one literally gave out and shot the spark plug out of the chamber. Replaced the plugs, wires, and cap and rotor while I was at it, and it runs great.

It burns a little oil, but the Si (2.1L) models are notorious for that. It's a design flaw.

General comments?

I was a little under-impressed by the low-end torque, not having driven a honda before, but at the high end it flies. It smokes most ricer civics. Very little aftermarket support, so you have to get a lot of stuff custom-made (I'm looking into a custom throttle body) and intakes can be taken off early model Acura Integras.

The transmissions on these cars aren't well designed, however. In my automatic, when crusing at 60mph, the engine turns at about 3100RPM. With the manuals, I've heard that number is about 2700. I still cringe every time I think about how my old truck ran 60 at 1300.

The car has a very comfortable ride, with all the controls fairly well placed. I don't think i'd have a problem making long trips in this car.

It handles great. Best cornering of any car I've ever been in, and this is without the 4ws option.

Best of all is the gas mileage, I still get around 27 miles to the gallon, even driving it hard.

All in all, this is a great car for someone looking for a modern-looking affordable sporty coupe. If the car were to give out, i'd buy another one without a second's thought.
