2007 Hyundai Elantra GS review from North America
"Thrilled Owner"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
None. Not a single problem.
General comments?
I'm truly in love with this little car. I have owned a 2003 Sonata and a 2005 Tucson prior to this car. With gas hitting over $3.20 regularly now and my 150 mile daily commute costing me $600 a month in gas, I found it time to look into something with a little better than the 22 MPG I was getting with my v6 Tucson. My main concerns of stepping down to a 4 cyl. were noise when I was accelerating, Engine noise at highways speeds (65-75), and ride quality.
I bought the 2.0L w/16" rims, hoping both would help in those area's. The highways noise level is very acceptable. At 65 it tachs at 2500rpms and at 75 it tachs at 3000, neither of which is noisy. If you step in the throttle like your in a drag race and get it taching up in the 5000rpm range, you will definitely hear it then, but all cars make noise when at full throttle.
Highway ride has been suprisingly good. Quiet, smooth and handles most minor potholes fairly smoothly. Deep ones will wake you up a bit, but that's to be expected in a smaller car.
Speaking of that, I was shocked when I bought this car on how much interior room is in this vehicle. It Appears about 3-4 inches shorted than my 2003 Sonata I traded in, but it has more leg room in back that the bigger Sonata did. It also has more head room, even with the sunroof. The trunk is best in class for this size vehicle and has a low lift over for those of us on the back side of their 40's.
Seats are comfortable and firm enough to support, without feeling too stiff or hard. Sound system is awesome and I love the free XM trial that comes with the car. Will likely subscribe when it runs out.
Where I really am enjoying this car the most is when I get to do some city driving. It handles like a dream in the parking lot at the mall, has enough power to feel sporty if you want to take some back roads in the country although it is a little soft in the suspension with too much body roll to really feel confident enough to push it to it's limits.
Gas mileage with about 80% hwy/ 20% city started around 30mpg and has increased to 32.5% so far with only 2000 miles on it. Hoping it gets up to the mid 30's and I'll be thrilled. The gas savings alone is paying over 50% of my payment so I'm pretty thrilled.
If this holds up as well as my 100,000 mile Sonata and 60,000 mile Tucson have, I'll be a happy customer.
Seems Hyundai is getting it done right in all the models I've tried so far.
