1998 Hyundai Elantra GL review from North America

- Transmission skips and kicks and is ready to go to the big scrap yard in the sky.

- Major electrical problems, car gets stuck in park and brake lights fail almost weekly.

- Check Engine light coming on is almost a weekly event, I thought it should have it's own day of the week.

- Passenger door handle broke, loved opening the door by rolling down the window everyone thought I was cool.

- Paint is flaking off on the roof already and I wash the car weekly and take care of it.

- Rust is showing up in various areas already and it shouldn't be.

- Car has terrible body roll, if you would like to try and turn a corner quickly doing 50km trying to avoid hitting other cars because the backend is swinging out of control is a must.

- Car came with cheap tires that only lasted 30,000km.

- Have gone through 4 sets of Hyundai brakes which is very odd since I gear down to overdrive most of the time barely use them and I don't drive in the city too much.

- Mechanics are always lying to me about the car and it's problems, one of them told me that this was all normal.

- Hyundai warranty isn't all it looks to be, it's really all a bunch of lies. I took my car in at 97,000km telling them the transmission was acting strange they refused to fix it because they thought it was fine, and it really isn't, my friends 84 Honda civic with 300,000km on it sounds and shifts better then ours.

- Brake shoes fell off at 80,000km, was an interesting experience not to mention costly.

-Dash lights blew at 60,000km it's hard to read anything at night time.

- Car has a decent engine, better then civics I've driven.

- Gets looks since I have a really weird color (midnight purple).

- First 50,000km it wasn't too bad, but after that the problems just started poring in.

- Basically you get what you pay for is all it comes down to.
