1993 Infiniti J30 T review from North America
What things have gone wrong with the car?
As with most Nissan built vehicles I or my family has owned, the transmission needed rebuilding after about 175,000 miles.
The knock sensor went after about 250,000 miles.
The linkage for the sunroof broke after about 200,000 miles, rendering it useless and with repair costs at the high end it will be swapped for a larger sliding rag-top.
The head unit for the stereo system burned out and replacing it with an after-market navigation system was found to be less expensive than replacing it.
Windshield replacement was an issue, I guess due to the angle the glass was placed in the frame. Debris thrown up from the roadways would easily crack the glass and would call for a new piece of glass almost once a year.
As for the rest of the repairs done to the car, they were expected and/or general maintenance items such as alternator and starter replacement, wheel alignments, "constant use" switches.
The interior shows slight sign of wear in the driver's area, but none that cause discomfort in any way.
General comments?
I may have only personally had this vehicle for a few months but it has been in our household since it's first few miles out of the showroom so I have definitely become familiar with its history.
The majority of the mileage is highway driving as this vehicle has been all over the eastern U.S. and has seen many driving conditions along the way.
The vehicle has not always been garaged, but the paint has held up remarkably over the years except where minor bruises have been inflicted. Rust did become present, but only around the windshield frame and due to a careless windshield repairman whom scored the frame upon glass removal.
With the T package handling becomes something that needs to be learned. This car has a distinct feel in taking turns. Many may feel like the car is sliding out from behind them the first few hard turns they take, but in actuality it's the HICAS four wheel steering system doing its job.
Off the line the cars is quick even with high mileage and almost maintains that initial original exhaust sound. Since the exhaust is stainless steel, it has never been replaced in all its mileage.
By switching to carbon metallic brake shoes we were able to get three times the mileage out of the brakes.
The trunk is definitely too small, but has neat compartments for tools and the supplied repair manual.
