I have the same issues with my 1999 Rodeo, I bought it brand new and as soon as the warranty ran out I had issues with oil consumption (up to 6 quarts between changes). Turned out to be a bad seal. I have also had problems with the gas gage reading empty even though I know it's not, the brake light coming on (bad sensor), etc. For awhile there I thought that I was going to have to have my dealership put a plaque on a parking stall just for me. Talk about a problem vehicle.
File a complaint with the federal agency called the Consumer Product Safety Commission. If they get enough complaints about that issue they will take action and you will be one of the first to be taken care of, when and if they act.
I bought a 99 Rodeo brand new. Mileage is very low for a 10 year old - only 35,500. Brakes were BAD since new. SUV went for a recall but - no improvement. Transmission is bad, the automatic transmission shifts erratically. Wipers are terrible, they stop when you need them most. Fuel gauge stopped working at early life. Even with a full tank it shows less than half.
Check engine light it goes on and off continuously. For no reason.
I never found the transmission stick until I read this column.
If I have to buy another car, I WILL NEVER BUY AGAIN ISUZU.
I still have an Isuzu PU Truck 1989 (300.000 km) and can't kill it. Runs like day 1 and more than the clutch + tires, brakes and muffler, never had to fix a thing. That's why I got an 1999 Rodeo.
If I never had trouble with the truck, now I have them all with this SUV.
Manifold gasket, fuel pump, leaking fuel filter... (literary running!!.. and the check engine light didn't even light up, only after replacing the filter!!)
What else? axle boots, ABS light steady on, Check engine on and on.. (oxygen sensor replaced, and another one)
Mass airflow sensor, idle air control valve, rusty tank, ordered a new one from Japan, waited 2 month and replaced.
I'd rather drive the old truck than this Rodeo crap, but I'll keep them both until they fall apart.
Now I hear a clunking noise in sharp curves at certain speeds, and by bumps... coming from under the car, rear left wheel or the front one, or right under the driver seat. It drives me nuts because I don't know where from... and all mechanics I asked, checked and found nothing, not struts, not shock bushings, not ball joint or U joint. They could not even hear it. But I can and know it is out there, but what??? Anyone had such a thing happening??? The sound is like a dry "knack" or deep "clunk". I hear it now in 2 years or more and ask myself when.. whatever it is.. is it going to fall apart. Any ideas?
I love this site!
ps. I live in Canada.
