By no means is this a chick magnet but it's as sturdy and reliable as your un-neutered malamute.

1993 Isuzu Trooper S review from North America

"By no means is this a chick magnet but it's as sturdy and reliable as your un-neutered malamute."

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Tappet noise from hydraulic lifters since purchased. Sound goes away after the engine warms up.

New Brakes/Rotors/1 wheel bearing 195,000km $1200.

Clutch replaced at 200,000km. The mechanic who replaced the clutch buggered the cruise control and Air Con. $1500.

225,000km Tune-up, timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, new spark plug ignition cables $600.

235,000km replaced stock shocks with Rancho shocks $800.

255,000km Complete new exhaust system $2,000.

275,000km alternator caught fire replaced $400.

285,000km 4 New Nokian tires $1100.

298,000km new brakes/rotors and 4 new wheel bearings $1200.

General comments?

I could never understand why consumer reports rated this as a hazardous vehicle for roll over's...but it was a boon for me as the price came down. It's a true off-roader compared to it counterparts... Ford explorers, Chevy Blazers and Jeep Grand Cherokees this truck has been on logging roads in the Chilcotins, Southern Cariboo, and the Valhallas and still has no squeaks or rattles. It's also much roomier then the pathfinder or 4-runner and has oodles more engine power.

This truck is still going strong at 300,000km, but is starting to get tired. Rust is beginning to appear in door seams. Interior plastic trim has held up well for 15 years and looks as good as new. Drivers seat is beginning to fray.

My only complaints are the tappet noise and the electrical gremlins that plague it in later life as well as the cost of parts and labour which make a BMW of the same period look reasonable.

I wish a newer model could be found with a Direct Injection turbo diesel engine as I do not know what to replace it with. I'm seriously considering the Mitsubishi Delica Starwagon which have recently been imported to BC or a VX turbo diesel Landcruiser.
