1989 Isuzu Trooper LS from North America - Comments

"I got a great vehicle for the money I spent"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The brake pads needed replacing and I am currently looking to purchase new shocks.

General comments?

I am a first time owner of a Isuzu Trooper and would like any information on what I can do to keep the performance of this vehicle at its top.

Also would like any information on shocks, glass packs for a Trooper (is it advisable), what is the best grade of gas (I use 92 octane), and dealerships that are in Los Angeles, CA. that have affordable accessories and service.

I would like to know if there are any 1989 Trooper owners out there that can give me advice on how I can upgrade/service the vehicle to give the best performance possible.

Funny thing with this truck is the shocks are the same as those of the Lada NIVA. If you do any offroading at all get a set of Rancho shocks (a bit stiff) and some Marshall Tires. I also checked the head gasket and oilpan for leaks. The Troopers tend to rust around the rear wheel wells and cargo bed as well. Otherwise they just keep truckin on forever.

I hear the six cylinder GM engines and automatics can be problematic. The standard transmission with the Japanese four cylinder have the same horsepower and better reliability than the GM V6.

You may already know this stuff though.

Hope this helps.

OK, 4-cyl. performance. I am not affiliated with Calmini, but the products that they have for the 2.6 are pretty good. Replace your exh. manifold with their header, replace the rest of the exhaust with 2.5 inch tubing with a glass pack muffler and a catalytic converter off an early 90's Chevrolet pickup (with the same diameter pipe). Use the Calmini camshaft, or get one ground to an RV profile. Next, get a Chevrolet air filter box and replace the stock one with that. There's also an upgrade MAF sensor that I'm unsure about, haven't done it, but have heard that it's helpful-try googling it. I've done everything above, plus milled ten thousandths off my head and overbored the block thirty thousandths, and my trooper positively screams. spinnn@optonline.net
