2004 Jaguar S-Type SE review from UK and Ireland

"Impressive engine and an excellent car all round"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing at all.

General comments?

Incredibly refined diesel engine with excellent mid range grunt and adequate power for "real world" usage. Fuel economy ranges from 26mpg in heavy town driving to high 40s on a long run. Quietness and smoothness of the V6 diesel has to be experienced to be believed.

I have found that the initial lag waiting for the turbos when pulling off needs to be accounted for, although it only took a day or two to adjust my driving accordingly. When the turbos are spinning the car is impressively punchy.

The 6 speed autobox is like witchcraft, and only in unusual circumstances can you actually feel it change gear. It adapts to your driving style too. Very long legged 6th gear makes for quiet 2000RPM cruising at 70MPH.

Mine is the SE, so has the standard suspension, and I find it a good balance between ride and handling on the standard 17" wheels. Nowhere near the same "gliding" effect as my XJ, but also nowhere near the same "ship in a storm" effect when cornering!

Very comfortable seats, high quality materials in the cabin only slightly less opulent than the XJ although the madrona wood is not as nice as the dark burr walnut.

Interior and exterior build quality appears to be very high, with tight panel gaps and absolutely no creaks, groans or rattles even over dreadful UK roads.

Touch screen sat nav and telematics system is absolutely superb, very intuitive and straightforward to use. £140 for the most up to date maps does not seem unreasonable to me. Standard audio system is good but not great, I've not heard the premium system.

iPod and USB audio interface available for £170 and is a 30 minute job to fit. Dealer will have you pay £400, but you can buy the part and if you're not happy to fit it yourself any decent car audio fitter will do it.

Swapped from a 4 litre XJ to this car and do not feel at all shortchanged.
