2005 Jaguar X-Type S review from UK and Ireland

"Comfortable, economical and quite pretty too!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing to date.

General comments?

I purchased my 2005 Jaguar X Type 2.0 D S in November 2005.

To date I am very pleased with it - even though I have only completed a few thousand miles. It looks great in British Racing Green with the 17” Andros Alloy Wheels upgrade and the comfortable interior looks very good in Champagne leather. Boot space is pretty good too – could be a bit deeper perhaps.

My last car was a 2.0 Alfa 156 which was great fun indeed and I did have a few reservations about switching to a Diesel. However, once you get used to the slightly agricultural engines noise when it’s cold, especially under 2000 RPM, the engine is very good indeed. You get a good push from the torque when the Turbo begins to blow at just under 2000 RPM all the way to its red line of just under 4750. It does perform best between 2000 to 3500 and you get very relaxed, comfortable cruising at 90MPH with the engine turning at just 3K. In terms of noise levels I can assure you, you just hear wind noise at motorway speeds, no engine rumble from the diesel and a good amount of torque to play which gives quite impressive mid range acceleration with without having to thrash through the gear box – which can be a bit notchy in first and second.

Overal handling is quite sharp and as with all front wheel drive cars push it into a corner hard and it simply understeers - especially with the TC off!

Fuel economy is pretty good indeed, it is averaging 43MPG which is a mix of both town and motorway driving and with today’s UK fuel prices I am enjoying this car being kind to my wallet!

In summary no real regrets except that I wish I ordered the new 2.2 Diesel which was not available when I ordered mine as a few more horses in the stable are always welcome. I am going to tour the car around Europe later this year which will certainly confirm my views to date or not!
