"Luxury convertible bargain"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Bushing replacement on shock-$10.

6 shocks-$300--Changed myself.

Seats are showing wear on driver's side.

Top needs replacement. Est. cost $600 with new top.

General comments?

A joy to drive. Recent trip to Zion was

great. Added windbreaker for top down cruising.

Great balance between handling and comfort. Added larger sway bar and upgraded rack bushings for

better control.

Quick in sport mode.

23 mpg on highway, 19 in town (far better than my 89 V-12).

Great review especially the mpg comments. I am looking at purchasing a 93-96 XJS and would like to know where you found a windbreaker / windscreen for an XJS. Any info. would be helpful. Thank you. Paul Wake. SLC, Utah. paulwake2004@yahoo.com.

I have a 5 speed car now as well and agree it is ten times as much fun to drive as my automatic was, but I average less than 15 mpg normal driving and maybe 19 or 20 hwy. Of course it could be my driving habits... Obviously the gear ratio is lower in the 5 speed as it is much slower on the top end compared to the automatic, but having both cars at the same time I ran them from a dead stop and a rolling start and at the end of a quarter mile the 5 speed was 8-10 car lengths ahead of the automatic.

I have (access to - it's not actually mine, sadly) an XJS convertible. Lovely car. Don't get anything like that good a mileage out of it though. Those figures are surprising! To be fair, this is an older model - one of the first true convertibles. Perhaps the newer V12s are more efficient? (Not sure if there was an engine change in the early '90s?)
