2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport review from North America
"They took a good 4X4 product and ruined it's reputation"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
I've also had cylinder #3 Vapor Lock several times. I bought it from a dealer who gave me a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty. It started happening while it was under warranty. It was the 4th Jeep I've bought from that dealer. The dealer cleaned the injectors the first time it happened and then placed additional insulation around the injector the second time it happened. Each time they reset the computer so the check engine light isn't on. Now, the 3rd time, the dealer wants to replace the injector on cylinder #3 at a cost to me of over $350.00 I've come to learn that Jeep's placement of the heat shield, has resulted in this problem in many vehicles, mine included. It was done on a recall back in 2001 to place the shield where it is, to eliminate debris from getting into the exhaust manifold and causing a fire. I remember getting the recall notice in the mail on a 2001 that I bought new back then. Now, the dealer is trying to tell me it's because of the methanol added to fuel. The methanol will "boil" at a much lower temperature in the injector, causing it to vapor lock. Well, if the heat shield installed between the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold was proper, there wouldn't be enough heat getting up and causing the fuel to vaporize in the injector. This is a problem with so many 2001 4.0L Jeep's, that the manufacturer is trying to get out of having to correct the condition in all the vehicles due to the cost involved and taking a such a loss. It will be the last vehicle, new or used, that I will buy, that was manufactured from the parent company, who offers vehicles under several brand names. I've bought 4 Jeep Cherokee's from that one dealer, plus I've owned 5 more dating back to 1978. This will be the last.
General comments?
The vapor lock problem has now also been showing up in other years and models made by that company.
