1990 Jeep Cherokee Laredo review from North America

"The best, most versatile vehicle I've ever had"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The drivers seat frame is bent and the fabric is torn (expected, considering it's age and mileage). There are various leaks and I've had to replace the alternator, power steering pump and water pump. I've also converted the cooling system to an open style system and rigged up a override switch to the electrical fan to keep it running if I desire. The front axle U-joints were JUST replaced and appear to have been the original units (not bad, eh?). The front wheel bearings are in need of replacement as well (appear to be original, again not bad).

General comments?

The exterior of this XJ is in very good shape considering the age. I have painted it with Herculiner paint to help maintain it's integrity for years to come. Now it has a chance to live as long as I expect the motor to live.

The drive-line is very much original with only a few parts replaced (U-joints, tires, etc). The original axles, t-case and drive-shafts are still in good working condition.

The engine is absolutely reliable. It gets a little noisy if it leaks too much oil, but it starts every time and purrs like a kitten. I've replaced most of the accessories (water pump, PS pump, alternator, etc), but the engine itself is in great condition. While it does have some leaks, it burns no oil. The plugs are pretty clean showing that the engine runs a little lean with no signs of oil blow-by.

The interior is comfortable enough but can be a bit uncomfortable on long road trips. I'm thinking about getting some more comfortable seats, though. Although the interior is well worn, it is still in decent shape considering the miles and age. It adds "character".

This thing just won't die... I've power shifted it down the drag strip (11.5 seconds @ 62 mph 1/8th mile), ripped around in bumper deep mud, climbed rocks, drove on many trails, hauled my ATV's with it and drive it back and forth to work every day. The only time it hasn't started is when the battery died on me and when the starter gave up the ghost. But, what car wouldn't have those issues with 180k on the clock? The only real damage that has been done is when I bent my tie rod after slamming it into a rock. What other vehicle can you do all of this with and not break it? Really? And to top it off, I'm getting over 20 mpg on the highway.

I LOVE THIS THING!! I'll drive this until I can't drive it anymore... then I'll fix it and drive it some more.
