1988 Jeep Cherokee Four door review from North America
"Too good to ever sell or trade"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Replaced starter motor @ 150,000 miles. Consider it as routine repair.
Replaced transfer case @ 180,000 miles. This was unexpected, but have reason to believe the Jeep had some rough treatment before we bought it.
Driver's seat bolster (the padded area under your left buttock) gradually collapses. All older Jeeps seem to suffer this. I bought a better seat in a boneyard, but it is a little collapsed too.
Had a thorough brake maintenance at 250,000 miles. It needed some hoses, one new drum, both front rotors turned, new pads and shoes.
Clear coat finish failed completely.
General comments?
The inline six cylinder engine appears to be unkillable. At 256,000 miles it gets 20 mpg combined, and has never had any engine work. We change the oil every 3000 miles, using a Union 76 synthetic oil "for older cars".
Based on our experience with the Jeep Pioneer, we eventually bought two Jeep Grand Cherokees. "Little red Jeepy" is still in the family, and about to transfer to one of our children.
