"Quality needs IMPROVEMENT!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Regulator for the drivers side window broke (very common for Jeeps) while I had the vehicle parked. This dropped

the window and a subsequent storm drenched the interior of my vehicle!

Power window switch was intermittent

for passenger windows (power lock portion) so that had to be replaced at the cost of $140 (I did the repair)

Replaced the front pinion seal at 15,000 miles. Noticed it leaking again at about 22,000 miles. Free play was out-of-spec which resulted in a replacement of all of the bearings in the front differential at a cost of $700.

Replaced both front wheel bearing assemblies at approximately 50,000 miles (another common Jeep failure)

Paint is peeling off of the top lip of the rear hatch after 45,000 miles!!!

General comments?

Good power; in general I think that the main power train components are well built.

Way too much maintenance though; Jeep quality is dropping with them being acquired by Daimler Chrysler (not that it was exceptional before!)

Rides well; pretty comfortable for an SUV.

The initial price to get into this SUV

of $21K is reasonable; however better have some money in the bank for repairs!

I too had a problem with the paint peeling off the top of the liftgate on my 1998 Cherokee Sport. There was also a problem with rust on the bottom of both front doors (despite placing mud flaps on all four wheels). But there is hope. Chrysler offers a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty against paint/rust problems. I took my Cherokee to a local dealer, showed them the paint problems and cited the warranty. A week later I had my Cherokee back with fresh paint on the inside door seams and a complete repaint of the tailgate. Give it a shot.

I really think the reviewer knows much about his Jeep. The Jeep Cherokee 4.0L Engine is a bullet proof engine. This particular engine has to be, by far, the best motor ever. If it were bad, would they be in just about every Cherokee from the early 90's to when they stopped making them? But, as the case with every car, every once and a while you run into a lemon. But with the Cherokee's, that every once and a while is rare.

I am also having problems with the driver door modulator. I bought my Jeep Cherokee when it had 24,000 miles on it and "we" just turned 57K. I am happy with it other than the rear passenger windows being temporarily inoperable, thankfully they are up. No problems with transmission, although she gets shaky at 75 mph. The rear differential was bone dry one time, still never figured that out. Other than a few things, great vehicle so far.

I too had the window problem, the motor went out cost of repair approx $360.00 per window.

Current problem is with cruise control and throttle-problem still hasn't been fixed. No one is sure what it is. It started with the check engine light going on when I used cruise control. As long as I didn't use everything was okay.

Then the throttle started, I guess sticking, it would rev

(never past 1200) while I was stopped at a stoplight or when I put the car in park. It's intermittent. any ideas?

Sounds like the Throttle Positioning Sensor needs to be replaced. No big deal, find a good mechanic to do the job.

I have a 1999 Jeep Sport and I think I liked my 1992 Better. I have had some trouble with my drivers window, rear driver wheel bearings going out and the door speakers are in and out! What a shame because I have a nice CD player. I have about 95 thou. miles on it and these problems have been going on for about the last 30 thou. miles. How come if the window problem and speaker problems are frequent won't they do anything about it? Also my driver seat (side leather) has three tears and I only weigh 128. My 1992 had fabric on the side as well as the seat part. I think my 1992 Jeep Sport held up better all the way around.

I have a '99 Jeep Cherokee Sport. I have had it for a year and it has 90000+ on it now. My suspension went out, my brakes were totally replaced, I need new Universal Joints and my starter is going. I also had my belt break and a new Air Compressor put in it. My speakers go out in both doors. My seat has tears in it. The vehicle handles well over all, but it still makes a crazy squeaking noise when I turn it on though... any ideas?

Squeaking noise on starting? - Check that the accessory drive belts are adequately tensioned, but not too tight or you'll knock out the bearings of such parts as water pump, alternator, steering pump, A/C compressor etc.

Dealers love to do this, so they can sell you new parts.

1996 Grand Cheokee Limited 4.0, 4- WD, has radical shimmy at 50 MPH. Must reduce speed to stop the shimmy. Dealer does not know why. New tires and wheel rotation does not help. Whats wrong?

2nd Jeep owned,1st Cherokee Sport and so far Great. Got it for less than wholesale with 47,000 miles (1999).The only questionable concern is that the underhood fuse box looks new and has the date 10/03 written on it..Has there been a recall or problems with this? I have not found anything on it. It appears to be a solid vehicle and so far,I have been pleased. All of the problems in the other posts, I have not seen as of yet. In fact, I traded in an 01 Toyota 4dr pickup for it, which,in my opinon was a less than desirable vehicle and I thought it was time to buy AMERICAN.

I have a 1999 Cherokee classic and have also experienced the window problem. I'm approaching 75k miles and little stuff keeps breaking: the switch for the rear wiper/washer, the fog lights, the front driver speaker, the speedometer. It's awfully loud and rides like a farm pickup, but I knew that before I bought it.

I have a 2001 jeep Cherokee LTD. with 115000 miles and at about 100000 miles when I drive between the speeds of 45 and 50 mph it violently shakes don't know what that is had some wok done no one knows what it is I bought the car in the winter and thought the AC worked I was wrong so now roll 4 60 in the summer (4 windows down 60 MPH) the only other problem had was the passenger door the automatic window switch goes in and out. Overall I love my jeep the motor is the the best minus the horrible gas mileage, but it starts every time cant complain about that.

This is my second 99 sport, they are incredible suv's. I have had very few problems with either of them. As for the issues that some of you are having like the window motors you are paying way to much for repairs you can buy a new window motor for $55.00 and fix it yourself in about 40 min its not hard. Also the wheel bearings you can get as low as $65.00 and can be changed in your garage with a few tools in 1 to 2 hours.

Good luck happy 4 wheeling!

1999 Cherokee Sport with 160,00 miles, driven mostly in New England and New Jersey. Now in coastal South Carolina Rusted-out brake line to rear brakes recently replaced at just over $300 by local dealer. Noted rust-through body areas under both right side doors, and a look at the bottom of the body shows serious rusting on most surfaces. Is it worth having some kind of gunk applied there to inhibit further rusting? I love this car!

I just bougt a 1999 Jeep Cherokee SE! I'd like to thank all of you for your input on all common maintnence problems. I found a cherokee that was goverment owned with only 70,000 miles on it. It is very basic (roll your own windows up) I love it! you could still smell the "new jeep smell" inside it!! imaculate condition! plenty of power with the H. O 4.0L.. I have grown up with jeeps all my life since a kid and now I finally have one of these legends to myself! great SUV!!
