"Not a nice ride for the money"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The jeep makes a whining sound at 48 MPH and above when you tap on the accelerator.

Dealer states that this is normal and they all do this.

General comments?

The 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is very cheaply made on the inside. Generic looking material, no imagination on the design, knobs look old fashioned. It rides OK at best, and has no guts in the V6 model. But I knew all that when I bought it.

Sometimes it's OK to have no frills. But, I'm dissappointed in the service side. A jeep rep. (not a local salesman) stated that the noise it makes is normal. I will drive another one, but this upsets me. They're either blowing me off, or they found a problem too late and don't feel it's cost effective to fix it.

I have the same problem with my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. At 2,438 miles I took it to the dealer to check out a clicking and rubbing sound from the transmission. The transmission mechanic spoke with the Chrysler Star repair consultants. They had no repair suggestion and said that they had no major complaints nationally. The mechanic, left to his own devices, tracked down a cable that was in contact with the transmission cooler lines. He padded this line and the sound was "minimized". He told me to try it for a week or so and report back. Well it is two weeks now and I have about 3000 miles on the Jeep and different sounds have been added to the mix and some of the original sound has returned.

Now, at 40 mph as the Jeep shifts into high gear, a whine is heard. This whine is heard at highway speeds and is particularly noticeable at 60-65 mph. In addition there is now a vibration sound and the original clicking sound is heard upon acceleration and deceleration.

These sounds should not be considered "normal". I intend to record the sounds and contact Chrysler-Jeep.

I agree. I recently bought a 2003 Jeep 6cyl Laredo. Unfortunately I made the mistake of just test driving it at slower speeds. Now and every since I drove it off the lot.. at 48 MPH, just like clockwork, the transmission starts whining along with making a "airy" type sound when I push the accelerator. Took it back to to the dealer twice and they ended up replacing a valve unit on the transmission. Did no good. Test drove 2 others on their lot and they all did it. I took the salesman with me and he heard it as well. Right now they still haven't advised of a fix. Glad I bought one with a 7/70,000 power train warranty, because I might need it. If any one has any luck with a fix, let me know and I will do likewise.

P.S. Great Site!
