1990 Jeep Cherokee Laredo review from North America
"I Love My Jeep!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
When I got the Jeep at 170,000 miles, it didn't need anything.
I have all the maintenance records since it was new.
The clutch was replaced at 140,000 miles by previous owners, and at 170,000 miles when my son burned it out driving in stop and go busy traffic for three hours on a hill because of a roadside fire.
New water pump and thermostat at 100,000 miles and new water pump just done at 200,000 miles.
Rebuilt exhaust manifold just done at 200,000 miles.
New brake pads at 50,000 miles and at 139,000 miles.
New oil pump housing and new catalytic converter at 152,000 miles.
New catalytic converter and muffler at 185,500 miles.
New starter at 160,000 miles.
New shift knob twice. Sons (3) grips are too strong I guess.
New valve cover at 170,000 miles due to oil leaking.
Driver seat is loose, rocks back and forth. Broken bolt.
General comments?
I pulled my son's lifted 1985 Chevy 4X4 pickup out of the mud with my Jeep when he got stuck!
This son also fell asleep at the wheel and went off the freeway at One O'clock in the morning with 3 passengers and a dog. No one was hurt. He broadsided a tree, it put a dent in the side and the tree limbs broke out two side windows. It did not affect the vehicles performance at all! He put it in 4 wheel drive and drove right back up onto the freeway and came home (six-hour drive)!
I have never broken down in this vehicle. There are always warning signs (noises) long before that happens.
It seems quite expensive to maintain, but well worth it if you can afford it.
My youngest son wants to buy my Jeep off of me, so I am looking for another one. I am ready for an automatic since I'm getting older.
