1990 Jeep Cherokee Laredo review from North America
"Good rig to haul stuff around in"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Everything stock when I got the jeep.
No rust so far. only thing wrong, E brake was broken.
At 118,000, headliner started falling down.
Around 124,000 miles, brake lines failed.
At 126,000, right axle joint went.
At 128,000, alternator went.
At 130,000, water pump went, and my four wheel drive stopped working, later to find out that my 4x4 differential fork was off by a small margin, constantly keeping it in 2 wheel drive.
132,000, oil sending unit broke. when this goes, oil pours out fast!
134,000, idle pulley went and ball joints gone.
135,000, cruise control stops working, still don't know whats wrong. professional coolant flush done.
137,000, 2 tie rods no good.
140,000, track bar no good.
141,000, left axle joint goes, around this same time, my ignition regulator goes.
142,000, vacuum lines replaced, and brand new headliner put in. rest of U-joints on car needed replacing.
143,000, exhaust leak near the manifold.
Drivers side window rolls down about halfway, the seatbelt thing you click it into breaks, around this mileage.
146,000, air conditioner stops working due to a leak or something. replaced both tail lights due to cracks in them.
Replaced rear glass window because a tree branch fell through it.
147,000, front brakes done.
General comments?
I can't believe this thing is still running!! I have driven up a river in 2 feet of rushing water twice. drove it up a 3,000 foot mountain 4 times. got it stuck in a couple feet of snow a few times and had to have it towed. slid down a steep icy road back wards going about 35 and hit a snowbank which threw the back end up wards off the ground about 3 feet, which basically rested it on its nose till I got it towed out the next day.
After all this, it still runs great and
the transmission is fine.
Everything that went on it is now fixed.
My jeep has started up in -40 degree temps in New Hampshire.
You can't beat 4.0L 6 Cly.!!
Great performance, and I recommend "Mobil drive clean" oil for this type of engine with about this many miles.
Very comfortable seating.
Good looking car.
Overhead consoles came with the Laredo and limited editions in 1990 and are a cool convenience to have!
Also, if you need parts for your jeep Cherokee 1984-1996, go to a junkyard and pull parts off yourself, don't get cifed into paying auto body shops. most of them are ripoffs!!
