First I found within the first year of ownership was that the brake rotors were warping. When decelerating down the front wheels started shaking.
After 15 months the performance slowed down in the sense of - I push the pedal, but the car cannot move uphill: diagnosis was that the transducer in the transmission was damaged.
In the meantime my brake rotors needed to be refurnished one more time.
The grand surprise came in 2004 at about 58000, when the transmission died.
I brought the car to a Jeep garage and they wanted to replace it for a new at 4000 $. I went to a transmission shop where they installed a rebuilt one for 2800 $. Jeep Dealer did not want to release my broken car to be fixed at transmission shop because he wrongfully assumed I was driving his rental car. This incurred another $ 100 because of confusion of towing company, transmission shop, me, and Jeep dealer.
Now that the transmission is fixed, at 60000 miles, the engine warning light goes on again, even flashing, and the trouble code says its engine misfire. Technician tells me he has to replace the ignition solenoid. Happens often, he says, he knows that from the Wranglers.
This Jeep is a soccer mom's car to bring kids to school. this will be our last Jeep.
Our next car will be a Toyota.
So your Jeep dealer thought you were driving one of their rentals and wouldn't give you you're Jeep back unitll you turned over the rental, even though you didn't have one, and you paid $100 to them?? You must be insane!
And the fact that you noticed the performance getting worse over time, yet you kept driving it, no wonder it broke. I think it would be better off for you to drive that Toyota. You obviously don't know how to take care of a Jeep.
A 2001 Jeep Cherokee with a V6???!!!
I think that if you take the time to pop the hood and actually look at the engine, you'll find a 4 liter straight six. If not, that may be part of your problem- somebody switched engines!!!
I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and I've never owned a vehicle that had as many problems as this one and it is the first brand new vehicle I have ever owned.
It has 77K miles on it. While under warranty several minor things like speaker, heated seat, air condition button, side panel coming lose, leather on steering wheel getting a melted look, etc... were fixed. Since then I've had all 4 rotors and all 4 brake pads replaced, but there was an axle seal leak that ruined the rear brake pads and I had to get them replaced again. The PCM controller chip needed replaced, and there was a evaporative leak that was fixed. Although there is a Technical Service Bulletin out for axle leak, the dealer said it was a different type of axle leak, so there would be no discounts for me : (Plus the heater is out and there is also a Technical Service Bulletin on the blend door for that, but the dealer says it will cost $850 to fix it.
I finally got all the things taken care of except the heater and I was ready to get the heater fixed, but when I drove the Jeep home from the dealer it died and now I hear that the engine has to be replaced. First the dealer said it would be $500 something to look and see what is wrong with the engine, and then $1500-$2000 to fix the timing chain if that is the problem. So I had it towed somewhere for a second opinion and they quoted me $5900 to replace the engine. They said it was a poorly designed engine b/c the oil does not get up to the top of it well. And they have some in stock, b/c this has been a common thing. Gee! It never stops with this vehicle. ---And I get the oil changed every 3K-5K miles.
This is the most expensive piece of junk I've ever owned!!! Oh, and it came with chrome wheels and the chrome is peeling off!!!
I'd rather pay the price of a junk car and drive that around, as pay all this money for a junk car in disguise!
Anyone else having these problems???
I guess in a year or two I will be able to look forward to a new review titled "Toyota is a bogus".
I have to agree with the person directly above me - if you don't know that your vehicle doesn't even offer a V6, only an in-line 6, then maybe you shouldn't be reviewing it. If you don't know the difference, which I think you don't, maybe that's why it conked out on you - poor maintenance and no knowledge about a vehicle.
