Rear shackle snapped in half.
Starter solenoid died.
Steering box was hanging off the frame.
Hardtop didn't mount properly.
Transmission melted itself.
Alternator sucked.
I loved this car, even with all its flaws. It was sooo much fun to drive. It had a swapped in 360 V8 with a 3-speed manual tranny. It could spin its 36" tires from a dead stop.
Unfortunately, it was very uncomfortable and got (no joke) SIX miles to a gallon typically. The final straw was when the transmission physically DISCONNECTED itself from the bellhousing. I paid a mechanic $500 to fix it and sold the truck. I miss it very much =(
A 360-powered Jeep with 36" tires that are frequently smoked like that is gonna sooner or later spit out a chewed up tranny.
Hi:
I'm wondering if you can help me. My sister has a 1979 CJ7 (with the eagle on it). It has the original paint and soft top. Can you tell me how much it might be worth? Maybe you could point me in a direction?
Thank you in advance for your help. Karol.
Your 1979 cj 7 is worth about $2500 bucks if is in excellent shape about $3800.
You need to post a picture and give a complete discription of the cars shape. but normally you can get about 5 grand for a cj in exelent condition. that means frame up. and no costimized parts.
Hey,
I'd like to make an offer on a 79' CJ7 in my neighborhood. It is brown with RENEGADE written down the left and right front side. It's pretty beat up, a large rusted scratch down the right side, a missing right external door handle, a bad water pump, a hole in the grill, and other smaller rust spots and scratches. However, I'm interested in fixing it back up. It has over 100,000 miles as well. How much would you suggest I offer?
Re the above comment, I would say no less than $100; oh, wait a minute, you said it was brown, right? OK, you should charge no less than $150 to haul it away from where it is desperately trying to rust into the ground.
Regarding the above 79 CJ (with considerable damage). The seller is asking $3800 for the Jeep. Does that not seem a little high? What would you suggest my maximum offer to be. Granted, outside of the mentioned scratch down the side, the paint is for the most part intact, it's not brown because it's rusty. Again, curious as to an estimate of a maximum amount of money I should spend on this vehicle.
Re the above comment, $3800 is EXTREMELY high for a '79 CJ7 that sounds like it needs a LOT of work. The Kelly Blue Book and other similar sites don't even go back as far as '79, but you can get on auto trader online and see what Jeeps from that era are going for, suspect you will find quite a few from the mid to late 80's that need much less work for far less than $3800. Just based on the information you provided, you should be able to get this for under $2K, but you should look around first, there are plenty of Jeeps available and you might do better to look for one that is not such a "project"
And don't buy the claim that it is a "collectible" just because it has the Renegade package---it's not and never will be!
