1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo review from North America
"It's a great vehicle for on or off road driving"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The positive-terminal, battery cable corroded inside the protective coating and had to be replaced twice.
The placement of the battery made it difficult to replace the bulb in the headlight on the battery side.
The clip that hold the visors in place broke on both visors before 25,000 miles.
The stereo and speakers deteriorated after 8 years of ownership.
The front rotors were a problem, as they were constantly having to be turned or replaced due to warping and/or wearing down. According to the mechanics, this is typical on Grand Cherokees.
The anti-lock braking system failed occassionally on bumpy surfaces. Pumping the brakes once usually corrected this problem.
The water-pump went out and had to be replaced twice, which wasn't bad over a stretch of 177,000 miles.
The fuel-pump also had to be replaced at 87,000 miles.
The catalytic converter had to be replaced at 90,000 miles, as it began to rattle.
The transmission started growling in reverse gear at 100,000 miles. Never affected performance.
Transmission was slow to engage in severely cold weather. It jumped back and forth from 2nd to 3rd gear when accelerator was pressed to the floor, going up steep grades. This worsened as the vehicle logged more miles.
General comments?
Overall, I loved my Jeep Grand Cherokee. I traded it in on a 2000 Grand Cherokee. It was very comfortable and reliable. Great in the snow. The engine and transmission stayed strong throughout the 9.5 years I owned it. Front brakes/rotors were its biggest fault.
