1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo review from North America
"Sadly disappointed by the quality and service!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
First fuel pump replaced at 53,000 miles. Now needing another one at 109,000 miles, but refusing to spend the $450.00 to get another one, I'll just turn the key a second time until it quits for good.
Power window motor replaced on passenger side front door twice once at 58,000 miles and again at 81,000 miles. No explaination from dealer or concession made to replace under any type of parts warranty, let alone labor warranty.
Radiator cooling fan replaced at 56,000 miles. Cost of replacement $259.00, plus additional $250.00 labor by dealer to install.
Rear wheel bearings roaring when first purchased and replaced at 60,000 miles along with rear wheel seals that were leaking. Dealer was only person who could not seem to hear roar, everyone else even during cell phone calls would ask what is that noise.
Rotors replaced second time at 65,000 miles due to unusual wear and vibration at owner's expense. Replace with Car quest heavy duty rotors and ceramic pads and problem not as persistent now.
When shifting into reverse, loud grunt and popping noise since purchased. Dealer took us out to a new vehicle and it did nearly the same and told us that noise was normal. While another dealer service technician outside of his job and not knowing that we owned this type of SUV openly told us they, Jeep, were having a lot of customer complaints on this vehicle and he didn't know why they, Jeep, hadn't fixed the problem before now. But advised us to buy and 1994 Grand Cherokee if we were looking for one because they seemed to give less trouble.
Front wheel bearing not available by anyone, but dealer parts department who jokingly laughed today and said I'd have to get them from him because they were not available yet on the aftermarket. He was right. But I'll find a junk one before I go back to the dealer to buy another part from them.
I just put new Michelin tires on today thinking it may have been a broken belt and the tire dealer took the front hub assembly off for us and let us see for ourselves the source of the noise, commenting that it is a common problem with this model Jeep that he encounters a lot and ask us if we could even hear the radio while we drove this vehicle. What does that tell us? I didn't buy and reliable model SUV.
And to add insult to injury the rear axle bearing seal that was replaced with the bearings is leaking and has been for a while now which they have noted for us during our return visits to change the oil and rotate the tires.
General comments?
I should have done better research on this particular vehicle before being sold into this vehicle by the dealer.
This will be the last Jeep product I will ever purchase, as well as will anyone who ask us how we like our Jeep (and believe me a lot of people do ask us daily), unless Jeep or Daimler/Chrysler does what is right and steps up to the plate and has some major recalls on this model. The dealers know this model is a lemon as well as the thousands of us who still own these lemonade producing products.
I'm still waiting Jeep, saving my parts and documentation. Buyer beware!
