1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado review from North America
"Not worth half the money"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Constant electrical problems.
Wiring harness at the drivers door for the power windows and locks shorted out.
Rear driver's side window and front passenger door locks inoperable.
Automatic transmission sensor went out causing a dead truck. Apparently no "limp-home" mode.
Flaky water temperature gage oscillates. Much fun to watch.
I have to replace the coil every six months, fortunately on line they're only $25 not the dealer's $50 each.
Fuel pump just went out, but at 201K miles not too bad. Unfortunately no access through the floor so you must drop the tank.
General comments?
In general the comfort level is low. Very cramped interior, no leg room up front. Head room is very good, however.
Ergonomics seem not to have been discovered by Chrysler/Jeep in 1993. Every control seems awkward and/or out of reach.
The climate control, along with being out of reach, is inadequate for the size vehicle and it's options are limited. This seems to be a common theme among American manufacturers. In 89 Nissan seemed to get it right. Maybe Chrysler needs another decade or two.
Ride and handling are surprisingly good for this type of vehicle, especially considering it has solid front and rear axles.
Power from the six cylinder engine is good, but the engine is a bit rough. Towing has been relatively easy.
Overall I'd keep the engine, but ditch everything else connected to it.
