2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo review from North America

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Tail light/Brake Light.

I've had my jeep for over 6 years and recently the left tail light started to go. I would work sporadically. I found that the plastic ring holding the electrical contacts had cracked. I placed a tiny block of wood under the contact and that held for a week. I ordered a after market replacement for ~$50 on ebay and installed it only to find that the brake light wouldn't work when the headlights were on or off and yet the tail light would function if the headlights were on (even thought the tail light and brake light are one in the same)

General comments?

To Fix the problem.

1. if your tail light assembly is damaged, chances are youre better off replacing it. look for after market part its cheaper than the OEM. Some typical damage is a cracked internal ring which holds the contacts in place or even worse a melted socket from overheating.

2. if your tail light assembly is intact and the bulbs are functioning DO NOT buy a replacement tail light assembly. First try to replace the bulb socket holder (gray piece). You can get this from a jeep dealer, part 4676589, bout 7 dollars. You might as well replace the buld, part 3157, bout $2 to $4 each.

3. if you buy a new tail light assembly and it still doesn't work, check your bulbs and bulb sockets (grey pieces). My brake light bulb socket had some discoloration due to heat?. This was my situation. I placed a new bulb socket (4676589) and bulb (3157) into my new tail light assembly and was back in business.

NOTE: carefull how you insert and turn the bulb socket. they should only turn one direction.
