Everything has held up rather well considering its age. Cost of repair isn't out of line. I don't see me parting with this lovely for quite some time.
Pings after long trips? Check for vacuum leaks. Try to turn your 3 vacuum switches. They shouldn't move.
It might be that air leaks are raising the combustion temperature. Check hoses. Air by-pass valves do fail. This will allow hot exhaust gas into the engine compartment which can fry hoses, spark plug wires and raise the temperature. Good luck.
