"Bargain-priced automotive icon"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Magnetic strip in the distributor failed which caused the vehicle to stall.

Engine pings after long distance driving.

General comments?

This classic 4x4 gets approving looks wherever it goes. It feels rock solid in most driving situations.

Everything has held up rather well considering its age. Cost of repair isn't out of line. I don't see me parting with this lovely for quite some time.

Pings after long trips? Check for vacuum leaks. Try to turn your 3 vacuum switches. They shouldn't move.

It might be that air leaks are raising the combustion temperature. Check hoses. Air by-pass valves do fail. This will allow hot exhaust gas into the engine compartment which can fry hoses, spark plug wires and raise the temperature. Good luck.
