Air conditioning (leaked - charge ran down).
Went through 2 batteries.
Gas gauge and oil pressure gauge failed.
Front U-joints wore out quite quickly.
New brakes only lasted 2 years (probably due to the weight of the vehicle)
Power windows required maintenance.
Tailgate switch for the back window failed.
Cruise control module failed.
Mileage has never gone over 15 mpg.
In spite of the troubles, I still love this vehicle.
It's wonderful to drive on the highway, very comfortable, and is a very stable, safe vehicle for towing.
In 4-wheel drive, this vehicle is amazing. It can practically climb trees. I have always been impressed with the way it performs off-road. I also love the removable rear seat feature. For two people, the truck becomes a very comfortable camper while travelling in the wilderness.
I purchased an 88 Jeep Grand Wagoner when the vehicle had just turned 6 years of age. The Wagoner is like a frisky cat when in 4 wheel drive!! Snow, mud, and water even cold weather was only child's play. It's like the Wagoner was alive it would just "come alive" steering it was a luxury, the wagoner handled much more affectively in these conditions. Things you didn't think were possible would amaze you. climbing a dry creek bed that was built for snow run-off. The angle was about 45 to 50 degree angle. We climbed to the top, about 150 feet, it was a very slow and steady climb, Once we reached the very top we observed the view and then we descended ever so gracefully back to the bottom of the dry creek bed!!! At that point in time I was convinced that I was, and still am going to keep this vehicle for a very long time!!! My second story.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SAY THAT MY 1988 JEEP GRAND WAGONER WAS ONE OF THE ONLY 4X4'S THAT COULD CLIMB AND CATAPULT OFF THE TOP OF THIS PLATEAU. LANDING AND WITH THE SHARPEST STEERING I TURNED AROUND AND WENT BACK DOWN. THE LOOK OF AMAZEMENT ON THERE FACE WAS WORTH THE BREAKING OF ONE MOTOR MOUNT!!!
