Starter was replaced. Discovered sometimes she does not like to start in "Park". So shifting to neutral usually does the trick.
This vehicle was totally restored before I bought it.
I love the wagoneer as a utility wagon. I can haul stuff, haul people, tow my boat and head out for road trips.
The dauchsund's love it!
Gas mileage is kinda icky, but I am trying to find a rig to carry Gerry Cans. Anyone have any ideas?
I plan on buying an airstream when I retire and do some serious "RV-ing" in Southern California!
On your extra cans of gas have you looked at JC Whitney? They have a after market that might work.
If you're looking to own the Wagoneer for a long time, as it sounds you will, you may look into converting to diesel. The AMC 360 is a strong engine, but have limited lifespans. My '85 died a slow death, with a lot of money along the way.
Using a new or rebuilt diesel (for example, a Cummins from a Dodge pickup or a Duramax from a Chevy) could get you 20 +/- mpg. A friend with a Chevy pickup from Alaska gets 20+ unloaded, and easily pulls a 10,000# trailer, too. The beauty of a newer diesel is its longevity, efficiency, and power. In addition, you could run biodiesel. The disadvantages are the extra noise (newer engines are way cleaner and quieter, and insulating the engine compartment can make a huge difference), and the potential to be a harder start in extreme cold (not a problem in SoCal).
The Jeep is definitely a keeper, enjoy!
I'm looking to buy a 89 - 91 grand wagoneer and definitely want to upgrade to a diesel to run biodiesel. I'm in LA. do you have suggestions of WHO could do this? suggestions or directions or year of cummins engine?
Thanks.

I too have been looking to modify a Wagoneer from the 360 to a newer diesel. I'm in Asheville NC and to this point, it appears there's no easy solution. If anyone has had success making this conversion I would like to hear about it.
Thanks.
I am looking into this subject as well and have not yet found any helpful clues. Best of luck to all.

I've thought about just "lifting" the Wagoneer body off the AMC frame, and with a few modifications, dropping it on a longbed dodge diesel 4x4 frame. My measurements have shown these to be a close width, and the long sections of straight frame on the dodge chassis lends itself nicely to having sections taken out to match the needed length of the Wagoneer. Found a donor Wagoneer, now for the expensive part, the Cummins 4x4 chassis.
I'd go with a 98 or earlier 12v diesel if it were me. The fuel pump is mechanical. They are solid motors and modification options to these engines are endless.
If anyone has a Grand Wagoneer that runs on grease, or knows how to make it happen, I need to know about it! Please email cataday@gmail.com!
