2002 Jeep Liberty Limited review from North America
"A decent package, but there are better options"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Transmission started acting up at 40,000 miles.
Some squeaking (might be the rear spring or bushing).
General comments?
My wife saw the Liberty really wanted an SUV. I owned a Grand Cherokee Ltd and was pleased with it so I thought nothing of it.
It's a shame that the Liberty doesn't share the same quality as the Grand Cherokee Limited. It seems Jeep cut a few corners to offer this vehicle at a low price. They shouldn't have. Now I feel the Liberty isn't worth it's price tag.
The vehicle is very noisy. Engine noise is about average, but tire noise is very loud.
As far as looks, the Liberty is a bit boxy, but styling (for the Limited) is pretty decent; inside and out. More modern appearance.
The interior is pretty nice, but leaves a bit to be desired. Radio and temperature controls are simple and to the point, but Jeep should fire the idiot that thought of the power window control layout. Lateral seat support (what little there is) is the worst of any vehicle I have ever driven.
Handling is hindered by a center of gravity that is a bit too high (even though it is a SUV) and suspension that is a bit too tight. I expected more from Jeep considering how well the Grand Cherokee handles (despite the roll).
I expected more punch off the line with the 3.7L V6. I suspect the vehicle's weight hinders it's performance. The engine doesn't struggle to stay up to speed though and will cruise easily at 90 mph.
ABS brakes these days should be standard, not an additional cost option as is the case with the liberty.
