1970 Jeep Wagoneer from North America - Comments

"This is one of the best adventure tools I have ever had the pleasure of owning"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Well the car is 31 years old, considering this it has no problems. But since I have owned it, I have made some repairs the previous owners neglected to do. Someone put the front brake shoes on backwards, the gas pedal broke out of the floor, and the roll up rear window channel was broken allowing the window to come up crooked.

The clutch needed replacement, there were several oil leaks, due to the age of the gasket material I'm sure.

General comments?

For the money I paid, less than $3000.00 dollars, this car has been fantastic.

The ride and handling are fantastic for such a large vehicle.

The off road ability is incredible and can only get better with some small improvements (4" lift kit and front and rear lockers for the axles).

The paint and interior are shot, but I am planning a cosmetic restoration of these over the next year or so.

The Buick engine and Dana 20 transfer case with manual hubs let me get much better mileage than you guys with the later model full time 4 wheel drive (I can get out and lock my hubs in freezing snow forever when gas is $1.90 per gallon). Sorry didn't mean to rub it in, I just couldn't help it.

When I have my dogs, kayak and mountain bike loaded up and am heading to the beach or the mountains, people just wave and everyone you meet had one just like at one time in their lives. It has been a great way to meet very interesting and adventurous people.

I have also a Jeep Wagoneer, built May 1970 with a Buick engine 350 ci, 8cil. I am restoring the car completely. At this moment the car is completely dismantled in pieces and has been "cleaned" with sand and now has his first primer paint on him.

The engine is still OK. My problem is the original color. He was green (light) metallic, but nobody here in my area has the exact color example. The company that does the paintjob doesn't have the right color example. Maybe you can find a book with the models and colors from that time/year?

Can you help me? My E-mail address is

Thank you very much.

Hello.

I am also a proud owner of a Jeep Wagoneer, though the fuel is gas right now. I am restoring her completely, this year I am doing the technical part of the car and next year I'm coming to America to get the right parts for the in- and exterior of the car. I am looking forward to this. Do you know any places (in California) to visit? Please reply to me. Thanks in advance.

I have a 1970 Kaiser Jeep Wagoneer. Bought it off a friend of mine several years ago. He had bought it for his 16 year old son, who thought it was butt ugly! I got it for $2500.00. It had 55,000 miles on it! I can't tell you the love affair I have had with this vehicle. After almost 9 years together, she now has 132,000 miles. Built like a tank. She was built in Dec. 1969. That makes her one of the last of the Kaiser Jeeps ever built. I'm a lucky man.

Too bad they don't build'em that that any more.

I bought a 1972 Jeep Wagoneer in Mulege, Mexico For about 600.00 dollars. I needed a water pump, new timing cover, timing chain, brakes, wheel cylinders, & brake lines. This fine machine had about 100,000 miles on it. Its the best 4x4 I have ever owned & I love working on it, everything is very accessible J.W.W.

Hi there, Im the proud owner of a 79 jeep wagoner along with a 23 foot dory that I launch right off the beach here in Pacific city Oregon. the place is real popular with the surfing crowd and hence, gets a lot of attention from fellows, (and gals) that come down to enjoy the area. the sand ramp gets pretty chewed up and a lot of rigs get hung here. the old 360 v8 workhorse has never failed to pull my heavy boat out, even though it weighs 2300#. Its been nice to have others in brand x rigs ask whats been modified and see the reactions when I smile and say nothing, shes bone stock! Beep.Beep.

I have a 1972 Jeep Wagoneer with a center console shifter. I haven't seen one like this before and am wondering if anyone knows where I can get additional information on this. It has a 350 engine as well. Is this the Buick motor? salsanchez4@yahoo.com

Just bought a 1970 Wagoneer with the Buick 350/TH400/Dana 20 combo - no rust (!) and only 91,000 orig miles. I have been looking for an early Wagoneer for years now, but rust is always a factor. Glad I waited and was patient!

Drove it from northern Colorado to Denver 60 something miles right after I bought it and everything worked great. Drove her straight to my longtime Jeep mechanic to go through her tip to stern and see what she might need.

Have a few questions for ya'll:

#1: to my knowledge no one has made an aftermarket 4+ inch lift kit for the 63-75 SJ Wagoneers - or am I wrong? Is there anyone out there who makes a lift kit for these old SJ's? ideally a complete kit with drop pitman arm, extended brake lines, etc...

#2: The Jeep is in amazing shape for a nearly 40 year old vehicle, but the dash is shot and cracked to hell. I hate dashcovers, is there a metal or plastic dash cover to ocover up the cracked dash? Thinking Diamond Plate dash over the top would look cool... any ideas?

#3: What's the lowdown on getting the Dana 20 T-case in and out of 2low back to 2high easily without strongarming the shift lever? I'm having the gear oil in it replaced, but damn it's tough to shift that sucker in and out of 2low. I'm experienced with later model Jeeps and their T-cases (300's/231's/229's/etc) but not these old ones so any advice is welcome!

#4: here in colorado, this old Jeep is now past the emissions laws and is classified as a classic car. I'd love to replace the manifolds with headers. Are there aftermarket headers available for these old Buick 350 Dauntless engines?

Thanks ya'll and I'll post pictures of the old Jeep when I get her back from the shop!
