1993 Jeep Wrangler review from North America
"The Coney Island Cyclone except you can actually drive it"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Haha, ax5 transmission, clutch, starter (two actually), alternator, slave cylinder, input shaft seal, seat wear, windshield frame rust, transfer-case output shaft seal, seat belts, temp sensor, oil pressure sending unit (Still haven't fixed that one yet), inaccurate voltmeter, and coming soon, the dana 35 rear axle (I have a ford 9 that I'm currently puting together. Oh yes its very possible.) Possibly more things, but I don't remember.
General comments?
OK before you make a judgement on this vehicle, you need to seriously ask yourself one question. Why am I buying this vehicle? If you intend to use this vehicle for its designed off-road prowess, you have yourself a winner. Needless to say, my jeep is bone stock. The only modification that I have made is the addition of an MSD box for a little better response (Gas mileage is off-set by more frequent replacment of cap, rotor, plugs... so don't try and kid yourself into beleiving that you will actually save with one of those). The cars ride is pretty uncomfortable, noisy, bumpy. Especially, paticularly, with a soft top. If you buy one of these, make it imperative that you purchase a hard top, it improves noise levels, aerodynamics, and mileage. Buy good tires, buy good tires, I do not reccomend the special clearance at sears. Buy the good stuff, it will set you back $600+ but you will thank me when you don't wrap yourself around a tree on a drizzly day/night. Do not get this vechicle with a manual unless you have the six. I say this from a standpoint of longevity. Otherwise, you absolutely must be impeccable with fluid changes. Even on manual trannies. Once a year on the tranny (You would be suprised what ends up in the manuals. Everything from sand to water. This is the result of a poorly designed stick shift grommet which does little in the name of protection from the elements), transfer case, axles, every two years for the radiator.
I use sythentic everything and recconomend you do the same... and no, I am not one of those compulsive people who use synthetic just to use synthetic, I use it because it is absolutely necessary in this vehicle, espeically manual trannies. If you have an automatic, change the fluid every 15K. Why? As an owner of 4 Jeep chrysler cars and trucks, one thing anyone with any experience with these vehicles will tell you is the absolute dismal reliability of their trannies. This car is best suited for a do-it yourselfer. Get ready to get dirty. Oh and make sure that when you buy this truck, by a decent set of tools, and a chilton or Haynes manual, because your going need it, I guarantee it. If your that cheap then go to the library and borrow it along with some of your best buddies tools.
I use my truck as my daily commuter and weekend warrior at the beach (summer-time), and occasionall (3 times a year) upstate in some mild mud-bogging trails etc). The most fun I have ever had was in this vehicle. Oh yeah, and how can I forget, this thing absolutely rocks in the snow***. I love blizzards now. Finally the fact that its rear drive makes this thing even more fun, especially around corners. Parrelell parking this baby is cake and visibility is top notch. Handling on the highway is OK, but it requires a bit of steering correction. In traffic, a jeep shines as it can dip better than many sports cars. Typically, no need for three point turns. This thing has an incredible turning radius. Of course I forgot to mention the possibilities of modification (V8s better axles trannies the list is endless). Oh yeah and don't forget to Rhino line your cockpit if you're an avid 4 wheeler.
