2001 Land Rover Defender 110 review from UK and Ireland
"Tough as nails, and a wagon for all seasons"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Had a blow out on the motorway, but the tyres were pretty old.
Getting them replaced.
The bonnet release catch doesn't work, but that's due to the weight of the tyre that's mounted on the bonnet. I'm going to screw a tough carriage spring to the inside the engine bay to give the release spring added bounce.
Rear window wiper motor is u/s.
Fog lights fuse is blown.
A lot of surface rust on the bumpers. But I fixed this with hammerite no problem.
General comments?
A great machine for going off-road and adventuring in.
With a 110 you can easily convert it to being an RV for living out of.
It's a great size for wild camping, and is about the same length of an estate car.
It'll do more than 70 mph with ease, but I'm happy with cruising at 60 - 65 mph on the motorway.
It is very very easy to do your own work on this vehicle. Oil changes are incredibly easy. You don't even have to jack the vehicle up to get underneath!
Parts are very cheap IMO.
The systems on board are basic, but you can repair them yourself. The ventilation for the cab is both fan and external vents you can open directly, giving you fresh air direct from outside without opening the windows.
There's not many vehicles that can do this nowadays. The 2007 onwards Defenders don't have this option.
If you are running an inverter from the dash area, this can keep it cool :)
Engines in good nick and starts first time every time. I've left it for 2 weeks previously, and the old battery kept its charge!
I'm happy with it, and aim to keep it for as long as possible.
