Previous owner messed with a non-compatible performance cam that resulted in having to rebuild the top of the engine ($$$$s). Since rebuild gone like a dream.
Both exhaust manifolds fractured and replaced.
Oil leak from gearbox.
Rust on doors/bulkhead.
This is an amazing vehicle and a true 4x4 in the old fashioned sense. It can go virtually anywhere and has good low end power, but is slow on acceleration. AC isn't that great. On long trips the metal under the seats gets really hot, but it is a pleasure to drive.
If by "dated" you mean the body and ergonomics then yes it is.
The body dimensions and basic design come from 1958 and were last properly updated in the early to mid 1980s, its uncomfortable and leaky alright. But it's lightweight and very easily modifiable with half inch/13mm spanners.
BUT the chassis, transmission, suspension and 5cyl' diesel are way in advance of nearly all the other offroaders in its class.
The japanese just put a flashy body down on a chassis that is much more basic.
I'm not defending LandRovers build quality here, but their design is MUCH more in depth.
Only Jeep/Mercedes and Pinzgaur are are as clever.
