1998 Land Rover Discovery LSE review from North America
"Don't buy if you are a crybaby about service"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Replaced faulty oil pump, new front brakes pads, replaced tie rod ends, leaky oil seals, yada, yada, yada..
General comments?
There is nothing like my Series I Discovery (OK, maybe there is.) Despite early replacement costs (already up to $2,000USD since April'05) I would not want to drive anything else. These trucks come off of The engine, althought slightly underpowered is smooth. The exhaust note sounds like a sports car. The ride is very comfortable on the highway, and the ride postion is unlike any other 4x4 on the road. Land Rover's are not known for reliability, but if you keep up the maintenance on the vehicle and find a knowledgeble (read:cheap) mechanic, you should have your Disco for a lot of years. Those who love the Japanese vehicles should stick with Honda's and Nissan's. Those of you who have driven American cars in the past will be able to relate, and should not be phased by the quirkiness of the vehicle. The Series 1 and Series 2 Discoveries are unlike anything else on the road. If you want to break out of the cookie cutter, car based truck mode, get yourself a Disco.
