No problems other than the passenger door squeaking when shut and a little excessive brake dust.
With a little over a thousand miles on the Freelander it seems to be a very solid vehicle.
I know I haven't even broken the car in yet, but I feel that it drives and handles much better than any other SUV I have driven for my style of driving. With the 17" wheels it drives like a sports car, but goes of road like a truck and you can even park in a regular parking lot without taking up two spaces like most new SUV's today The HSE package is very nicely equipped, but a little high compared to the SE. The 2004 are a much-improved vehicle from the inside out compared with the 2003 and earlier and at a much better price also.
I owned a brand new 3 door SE Freelander from April 04 to Sept 04 unfortunately the power fold mirrors would not power fold or did when they felt like it, there was a grinding noise on full left lock, dealers "realigned the sub-frames" still grinding, 4 attempts to fix mirrors all abject failures, constant creaking and grinding noise from the rear suspension and finally intermittent starting (it often would not) problems. Not bad for less than 6000 miles. Fuel economy terrible. Bare paint (door interior trims) on a "premium" vehicle I think not. Nice looking SUV, fun with roof off, very over priced, very poor build quality. Sold it!
With a little over 20,000 miles on the vehicle now, the only thing that has gone wrong is the windshield wiper has stripped out. The door used to make a small noise when it was new but it went away after a couple of months. I average about 20 mpg and have no trouble maneuvering in and out of parking lots, can you say that about most SUV's? What could I possibly complain about.
We've had our 2004 Freelander SE for just over a year now and it's been a pretty good vehicle. We did have an issue with the engine control module (caused the Service Engine Lights to come on), but the dealer took care of it and there has been no further issues. MPG has been right around 20 for combo City/Hwy.
Nightmare car to buy, the minute you buy, you end up spending loads of cash repairing it.
