Replaced original engine with a younger one from a younger vehicle because the main big end bearings "went", however the second engine was even more knackered than the first and "went" after about three months. Replaced second engine with a 2.5 petrol from a 90. Was most impressed - suddenly I was able to overtake boy-racers and really scare the pants off them.
Rear springs were knackered and replaced.
Land Rovers are the best vehicles in the world - they have so much scope for modifying and have always been the undisputed kings of their class despite competition from all round the world.
Mine was mainly standard and almost thirty years old but still beat off the competition off road. I miss it and will be getting another.
My dad had a Landy and I got it when I passed my test. Not the most comfortablt machine but fun and lots of street cred - boys were quietly impressed and, I think a little jealous as they got into their little 1.0 Fiestas!!!
I am in the USA and my son-in-law recently purchased a 68 series 2. It has been rebuilt from the ground up and looks "show room" new. He found another this week for me to look at, as I really like his. This one is a "redo" project. It is a 1968 series 2a in the blue color. It is completely apart. The only thing together is a new galvanized frame with the engine mounted, and part of the drive train. All parts seem in great shape and the present owner has many new parts in boxes. He is tired of working on it and his wife told him to move it or else!!
I am going to purchase it from him and my son-in-law and I are going to build this little Landy for fun and to get what I hope to be a very nice off road machine. As I am not familiar with the Land Rover, I would be most interested in hearing from someone as to what your thoughts on this project are and if you think I am going in the right direction to start this project. Oh, the engine only has 28,000 documented miles on it. If that is the correct usage of this auto, it seems to be a really nice find.. and it has the original top with it and the interior headliner looks almost new except for a little dust.
If you want to contact me you may do so at www.sonandc2@bellsouth.net. Hope to hear from someone who can help me with a little information or "tricks" to use in putting this little "Toy" together.
That 28,000 documented miles has got to be 128,000!!!

Yeah mate... 28 000? that's what it said on mine too, believe me, its 128000. stay up!
'Tricks' I can live with, but a Series 2A is NOT a toy. It is one of the best built machines ever. Many people (like myself) still use them for serious work. My Series 2A is my favorite vehicle and I use it for most occasions.
