"Best car made, smooth and reliable"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Bought this car new. Absolutely adore it, almost 17 years later. Can't afford the new LS at over $65,000 but may buy the IS.

Have replaced:

alternator,

battery,

power steering pump,

water pump.

Replaced the original soft tires at 25,000 but never as quiet with longer life tires.

Leather seats held up well in back as no one ever sat there. Front seat leather wore badly and I have covered.

Expensive to repair. May buy a Toyota Avalon next after reading comments posted here.

Absolutely terrible experiences with the Lexus dealers. Never had a loaner car, $27 to replace one light bulb. Never took it to the dealer after original 50,000 warranty expired. This is the number one reason I may have to go with Toyota and believe I can get the reliability at a lower price.

However, I love the car, smooth and beautiful after 300,000 miles driven.

General comments?

Nice comments on the Lexus. Let me give you a little input on the mechanics. Look on Craigslist and put in Lexus mechanic and you will be surprised to find out this car is very simple to have things fixed now. It's a 1991 and the new technology in cars now is much more advanced. These cars can be fixed by a backyard mechanic anymore.

Parts are cheap if you look on ebay or craigslist for someone that is parting one out. I don't like to buy used parts, but really the new parts I have found have been reasonable. I can't remember many prices off the top of my head, but I do remember being knocked off my feet at the ones I have had to buy.

But to tell the truth... I haven't had to buy many!!! 130,000 miles and all I have had to replace is the alternator, power steering line, a battery, my radio rear brakes and now I am in need of a set of springs. I am not even showing any signs of any up coming repairs. I bought the car at 110 thousand miles and drive it about 60 miles a day.

Some people tell me that these are driver cars, meaning that if you want one to last, they need to be driven, not sitting in the garage. The moment you stop driving a 100 thousand mile car is the moment things start going wrong. It's crazy!!

But yes, I too love my Lexus, and in 13000 miles I have driven it I can honestly say that I am sold on this product. If you buy an Avalon, I wish you luck at servicing new technology versus this classic automobile. Find yourself a mechanic!!
