1998 Lexus LS400 Mk IV review from UK and Ireland
"Arguably the best car in the real world"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
No faults apart from a slightly rattle from the glove-box cover.
General comments?
The Mk IV offers significant enhancements over previous models. Refinement, performance and handling are noticably improved (particularly high speed stability).
Sat nav is generally excellent (although the early version UK maps have some bugs) and the stereo is simply outstanding.
Car handles pretty well and can be driven surprisingly quickly on back roads, but it's not a driver's car and there's not a great deal of pleasure to be gained from driving it on its door handles.
Performance is deceptive - it's a very quick car, but it doesn't feel it until you look at the speedo.
Comfort excellent as expected.
Fuel consumption at 25-27mpg is excellent for the performance and size.
Points against include the aforementioned lack of involvement and bland looks.
Unless you buy a car for what other people think, and particularly if you buy after the first owner has paid off the steep 1st & 2nd year depreciation, it's a wonderfully enjoyable and surprisingly economical way to travel.
