1998 Lincoln Navigator 4WD review from North America
"Looks nice, rides nice, but be ready to start coughing up money if it has mid to high mileage!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The Navigator in this year is horrible. I've already had to replace the alternator, battery, air suspension pump, a coil which was causing a cylinder to not fire, and it sounds like it needs bushings or ball joints replaced in the rear. It makes a rattling sound when you go over bumps.
When my alternator went, I was in the middle of rush hour on my way to work, and the truck gave me no warning.
From the inside, the wood trim is flimsy, and my CD changer just stopped working one morning. And a fog light just burned out recently. So far, repairs have come to almost $3000!!!
I have only driven it 6000 miles since I bought the car, and it's driven softly, and never even traveled far.
Also, a few months ago when it was snowing, I would activate the 4WD, or AWD, and after getting out of the snow, it would not want to go back to 2WD (normal driving). I parked it, turned it off, and it remained on, until I let it roll forward a little and threw it in reverse, and I heard a loud bang and it got back into 2WD. This happened several times.
I have to say the car has been a head ache, and lets not mention the gas! I fill the tank up with close to $65, the way gas prices are here now... I'm currently desperate to sell it!
General comments?
I think the car looks great. All my friends say they love the car, and it is a comfortable ride. But when they hear about my repairs and costs, they say I should go back to a good old reliable Honda!
The truck is pure luxury, but its crappy as far as being reliable. When the 4WD wasn't acting up, it was a blast to drive in the snow. I got out of anything! And it is smooth and all of the luxury features make it a relaxing ride. But for the owner, in my opinion, it's a nightmare. I can't really afford $600 repairs back to back, but it is a luxury vehicle, a Lincoln, and has 95k now, so I guess it's normal, but I will never buy a American car again, at least not a Lincoln. I'll do just fine with a nice 4cyl Honda!
